Purpose of Position:
The Retention Specialist will develop strategies for student retention and transition. The position will work with faculty and students to ensure students are attending classes and completing coursework as assigned. The individual will play a key role in assisting students on a day-to-day basis and will serve as a role model for current and upcoming students. The position will work towards meeting the mission statement and purpose of the College. Must be able to maintain good attendance and a sense of responsibility. There will be times when late nights and longer hours will be required.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop strategies for student retention/transition.
- Conduct periodic career exploration, stress management, and other retention-related workshops.
- Assist LPTC in meeting advising and retention goals for students.
- Conduct workshops or presentations for students and/or organizations pertaining to admissions information, goal setting, study skills, communication skills, and test-taking skills.
- Coordinate community service opportunities and campus visits to four-year universities for students.
- Develop, coordinate, and monitor mentor/mentee relationships for students on an individual basis.
- Build and maintain relationships with LPTC staff and faculty to assist in assessment, academic planning, advising, and meeting other student needs.
- Assist in coordinating LPTC’s orientation for new and returning students.
- Report directly to the Director of Student Support Services and provide regular progress and data reports as needed.
- Assist with preparation and possibly attend the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) Student Conference.
- Assist with tasks and duties for annual graduation.
- Attend Study Nights during mid-term and finals week and offer support to students with assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associates degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred; degree in sociology, psychology, education, or related field preferred.
- Experience working with high-risk youth and non-traditional adult students in an educational or social service setting.
- Knowledge of student development efforts, including student support services, advising, mentoring, online learning, leadership development, and retention services desired.
- Ability to work well with diverse populations and underserved communities; strong desire to assist and help students.
- Strong communication, organizational, and writing skills.
- Ability to maintain good attendance.

Travel:
Occasional travel is required.
Condition of Employment:
- Must pass a pre-employment criminal background screen.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable.
